Abstract

Waste tires represent a significant environmental problem, while their high organic content makes them a promising feedstock for thermochemical conversion. In this study, the pyrolysis of waste tires was investigated to determine the optimal conditions for maximizing pyrolysis oil yield. The effects of pyrolysis temperature and reaction time on the distribution of liquid, solid, and gaseous products were evaluated. The experiments were conducted at temperatures ranging from 400 to 550 °C and reaction times from 30 to 120 min. The results showed that increasing the temperature initially increased the oil yield, followed by a decrease at higher temperatures due to enhanced secondary cracking of pyrolysis vapors. A similar trend was observed with increasing reaction time. The maximum pyrolysis oil yield of 59.1 wt% was obtained at 475 °C and 90 min, while the corresponding char and gas yields were 32.0 and 8.9 wt%, respectively. These results indicate that moderate pyrolysis conditions provide a favorable balance between thermal decomposition of tire rubber and preservation of condensable organic compounds. The findings demonstrate the potential of waste-tire pyrolysis as an effective route for converting waste tires into a valuable liquid product.
