Abstract
This article examines how the atmosphere of the American South in John Grisham’s A Time to Kill is rendered in Yu. Kiryak’s Russian translation Пора убивать. The study draws on the works of Richard Gray, Lewis P. Simpson, Cleanth Brooks, Irina B. Arkhangelskaya, Irina V. Morozova, Irina M. Suponitskaya, Antonina A. Iplina, Bakhrom A. Razzakov, Umrzakov Islomjon Isroilovich, and Zarina Usmonova, and focuses on racial and ethnic vocabulary, legal realia and socio-cultural markers. Using comparative, contextual, and translation analysis, it identifies such strategies as cultural analogue, calque, clarification, generalization, compensation, idiomatic substitution, and functional paraphrase. The findings show that these strategies largely preserve the social, legal, and emotional framework of the American South, although some culturally dense elements are partially neutralized. The article concludes that Southern authenticity in translation depends not only on lexical equivalence, but also on the transfer of pragmatic effect, social tension, and culturally marked detail.References
