Abstract

This article examines the methods and functions of depicting female appearance in 19th-century Russian classical literature. The author analyzes how the portrait transforms from a decorative element into a sophisticated tool of psychological analysis. Using examples from the works of A. S. Pushkin, I. S. Turgenev, L. N. Tolstoy, and F. M. Dostoevsky, the connection between the heroines’ external features and their inner world, ethical stance, and social role is traced.
