INTEGRATING METACOGNITIVE STRATEGIES AND DIGITAL TOOLS TO IMPROVE SPEAKING PROFICIENCY IN EFL CLASSROOMS

Abstract

Metacognitive strategies and digital tools are increasingly recognized as essential components in enhancing speaking proficiency among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. As modern classrooms shift toward learner autonomy and interactive learning environments, educators are exploring ways to integrate reflective thinking, strategic planning, and self-evaluation into speaking instruction. This article examines how metacognitive approaches-such as goal- setting, monitoring, and self-regulation-combine effectively with digital tools like speech-analysis platforms, mobile applications, artificial-intelligence-assisted feedback systems, and collaborative communication technologies. The integration of these methods not only supports learners in developing fluency and accuracy but also fosters long-term speaking confidence and independence. Drawing on theory and classroom-based evidence, this paper highlights practical techniques teachers can apply to help students become active participants in their own learning process. The study concludes that the strategic use of digital resources, when guided by metacognitive principles, leads to improved oral communication skills, stronger motivation, and more effective engagement in real-world communicative tasks. Recommendations are provided for implementing technology-supported, learner- centered speaking instruction in EFL contexts.
