Abstract
This article examines enantiosemy of address - the phenomenon whereby a single form of address carries contextually opposed pragmatic values, ranging from kinship-based warmth to distancing, deference, or veiled reproach in the prose of O‘tkir Hoshimov. Drawing on the author’s works “Ikki eshik orasi”, “Tushda kechgan umrlar”, and “Dunyoning ishlari”, the study analyses eight recurring kinship- derived address forms: aka, opa, xola, tog‘a, amaki, qiz, dada, and ona (oyi) - as they function beyond their literal genealogical meaning. The analysis is grounded in a linguocultural framework combining P. Brown and S. Levinson’s politeness theory, Vinogradov’s semasiological approach to word meaning, Hofstede’s dimensions of collectivist culture, and Sperber and Wilson’s relevance-theoretic account of contextual meaning construction. The results indicate that the enantiosemic potential of Uzbek address forms is systematically governed by three factors: relative age and generational hierarchy, the socio-pragmatic distance the speaker wishes to construct or dissolve, and authorial irony as a narrative device.References
